This is an abridged and revised version of a paper entitled " Do we really need both BEKK and DCC? A tale of two covariance models ". Abstract The management and monitoring of very large portfolios of financial assets are routine for many individuals and organizations. The two most widely used models of conditional covariances and correlations in the class of multivariate GARCH models are BEKK and DCC. It is well known that BEKK suffers from the archetypal " curse of dimensionality " , whereas DCC does not. It is argued in this paper that this is a misleading interpretation of the suitability of the two models for use in practice. The primary purpose of this paper is to analyze the similarities and dissimilarities between BEKK and DCC, both with and without targeting, on the basis of the structural derivation of the models, the availability of analytical forms for the sufficient conditions for existence of moments, sufficient conditions for consistency and asymptotic normality of the appropriate estimators, and computational tractability for ultra large numbers of financial assets. Based on theoretical considerations, the paper sheds light on how to discriminate between BEKK and DCC in practical applications.

Forecasting Conditional Correlation for Exchange Rates using Multivariate GARCH models with Historical Value-at-Risk application
The generalization from the univariate volatility model into a multivariate approach opens up a variety of modeling possibilities. This study aims to examine the performance of the two multivariate GARCH models BEKK and DCC, applied on ten years exchange rates data. Estimations and forecasts of the covariance matrix are made for the EUR/SEK and USD/SEK, whereby the forecasts are used in a pract...
متن کاملCopula-based Multivariate GARCH Model with Uncorrelated Dependent Errors∗
Multivariate GARCH (MGARCH) models are usually estimated under multivariate normality. In this paper, for non-elliptically distributed financial returns, we propose copula-based multivariate GARCH (C-MGARCH) model with uncorrelated dependent errors, which are generated through a linear combination of dependent random variables. The dependence structure is controlled by a copula function. Our ne...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Dynamic Optimal Hedging Ratio and its Effectiveness by M-GARCH Models: A Case Study for Iran Crude Oil Spot Price
Hedging the risk of crude oil prices fluctuation for countries such as Iran that are highly dependent on oil export earnings is one of the important subject to discuss. In this regard, the main purpose of this study is to calculate and analyze the optimal dynamic hedging ratio for Iranian light and heavy crude oil spot prices based on one-month to four-month cross hedge contracts in New York St...
متن کاملComparison of Multivariate GARCH Models with Application to Zero-Coupon Bond Volatility
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate different formulations of multivariate GARCH models and to apply two of the popular ones – the BEKKGARCH model and the DCCGARCH model – in evaluating the volatility of a portfolio of zero-coupon bonds. Multivariate GARCH models are considered as one of the most useful tools for analyzing and forecasting the volatility of time series when volatility f...
متن کاملModeling inflation rates and exchange rates in Ghana: application of multivariate GARCH models
This paper was aimed at investigating the volatility and conditional relationship among inflation rates, exchange rates and interest rates as well as to construct a model using multivariate GARCH DCC and BEKK models using Ghana data from January 1990 to December 2013. The study revealed that the cumulative depreciation of the cedi to the US dollar from 1990 to 2013 is 7,010.2% and the yearly we...
